Interview Preparation
The first step to effective interviewing is researching the industry, the organization and the position. If you haven't found a detailed position description, ask for one. You need to know what skills the employer is seeking so that you can demonstrate your fit. Make every interview moment count by conveying information which will help the interviewer understand what value you would bring to the position.
A great tool that Brown provides to help with this research is the alumni network, BRUnet. BRUnet is an informational resource in which alumni have volunteered to provide information about their careers and industries.
Wetfeet, is another recommended online resource that allows for company and industry research.
Once you have done your research, its time to practice. Your goal is to provide specific, concise answers that are supported with examples. Successful candidates avoid general responses ("I am hard working, good with people, etc.") and provide specific examples that illustrate the skills valued by the interviewer. For more details about the interview process as well as sample questions that you should be prepared to answer, check out our Effective Interviewing Tip Sheet.
Once you are prepared, we strongly recommend scheduling a mock interview with a counselor. The counselor will ask you typical interview questions, take notes on your answers, and provide you with feedback not only on the content of what you say but on your body language as well. To schedule your mock interview, call 863-3326.
