Make the Most of Campus Recruiting
Preparation and time management are key to maximizing campus recruiting
- Become familiar with Brown Career Connection and all that it has to offer. Check the system regularly for calendar updates, new organizations, additional events
- Research and learn about the variety of organizations participating in campus recruiting activities. Students are often surprised at the number of organizations that engage with the Career Development Center.
- Prepare for the time commitment. Plan ahead and allocate time on a regular basis to research organizations, edit and finalize your resume, attend career fairs and company presentations, and apply for positions. The recruiting process can involve a good deal of time and energy—more than you think.
- Carefully review job descriptions and select organizations to which you will apply. More is not always better; be selective and avoid stressing yourself out needlessly.
- Update and edit your resume. Emphasize the skills, competencies, and experience that relate to your field(s) of interest.
- Practice, practice, practice for interviews!
- Review interview questions and practice your responses
- Be familiar with everything on your resume and be prepared to discuss in detail
- Schedule a mock interview
- Prepare questions to ask in each interview
- Stay organized. Set up a tracking system with names of organizations, dates of interviews, contacts, etc.
Thoughtful planning will help you to manage campus recruiting. Be sure to meet with a career counselor if you have questions or concerns about the process!
