Service

Typically, service learning is in the form of public and/or community service work. Learn and Serve America's National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) cites service learning as

“…a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems and, at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves” (Eyler & Giles, 1999 as cited by NSLC).

Service learning opportunities can be anything that engages you with the community. You can write grants, develop and run programs, help with finances, marketing, research, teaching, etc. for the city government, a local nonprofit or organization, a neighborhood school or day care….anything and anywhere you feel you can receive valuable learning while making a contribution to the community in which you live and study.
