Overview of Services

The Career Development Center is a hub of year-round activity. It is impossible to characterize the diverse conversations that take place during counseling appointments, in small group workshops, or in our career library. Encourage your son or daughter to visit us in a way that feels comfortable.

Our services are based on the steps in the career development process. The process is cyclical - and students often return to early steps in the process as they learn more about themselves and possible opportunities. This is good! Career exploration is not linear and often takes unexpected turns.

It is helpful to have an introduction to the steps that inform the career development process. Remember that our staff is on hand to help students each step of the way.

Self-assessment—Gathering information about skills, interests, values and personality type to begin the career exploration process; using on-line assessments, books and other inventories.

Career Research—Investigating the world of work by conducting print, on-line and people research, including informational interviewing and networking as well as attending campus career fairs, information sessions, employer workshops and other special events.

Reality Testing—Gaining practical experience through internships, jobs, volunteer work, research experiences and campus activities - and continually evaluating interest and fit.

Job Search/Graduate School Preparation—Honing resume and cover letter writing skills; conducting mock interviews; writing personal essays, and participating in campus recruiting.

Please encourage your son or daughter to visit us early and visit us often.
