Successful job and internship seeking is about using a diversified strategy that takes advantage of many resources and allows you to connect with potential employers in multiple ways. A job or an internship search takes time and effort - consider it a part-time job in itself!

Here are the Keys:

START EARLY – Do we really have to tell you that waiting until the last minute is not smart? The more time you give yourself, the more thoughtful and strategic you can be.

KNOW who you are and WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR – Where do you want to live? What industries attract you? What are your qualifications? A career counselor may be helpful in sorting some of these things out.

USE ALL OF YOUR RESOURCES – As we said, if you make the internet your main strategy, you will struggle. Looking for any kind of work emphasizes people skills not computer skills. Here is a sampling of what is available in terms of people skill resources:

  • Previous jobs/internships – use your contacts to find future possibilities

  • Career Networking Conference

  • Career Fairs

  • Networking with alumni, family, friends, and faculty

  • CareerSearch – a comprehensive database of employers that can be searched by industry, location and keyword. (Only available in the Career Library)

RESUME, COVER LETTER, AND INTERVIEWING SKILLS – Make sure these skills don't hold you back. Career Services offers workshops, walk-in hours, and individual appointments.
